Entrepreneur Spotlight: Eric Poelmann, part 1

We sat down with serial-entrepreneur Eric Poelmann, who publishes an innovative, insightful, very useful newsletter for Europeans who want to invest in the best China has to offer. His equity picks last year returned 57% for subscribers. Here is the first part of our interview.

What is your business?

We publish a financial newsletter focussed on China under the name www.MyChinaStocks.com. The newsletter is published in Dutch and German.

How did you become interested in China?

My former job brought me to China for merchandise buying. My fiancé is Chinese and that brings me to China twice a year. If you visit China every once a while and you compare those visits, you see what extraordinary development the country makes in just a few short months. It's fascinating!

What makes your newsletter unique?

In the Netherlands, a specialised newsletter on China, in Dutch, is unique. Since we focus on companies with a quotation on one of the American stock markets, information can be found for people doing the research. Our opinion about those companies is ours, it is unique. Our research is one of a kind.

Where did you get the idea for the business?

In the USA.

Tell us about the growth of your business? When did you start and how big is the business now?

The start was in October 2006 in The Netherlands. In June 2007 we launched the newsletter in Germany. Sales in the first year were slightly over half a million euros.

Where did you get the capital to start the business?

This is an internet business. You find prospects through Google. Converting them into paid subscriptions is done by direct email. Hence, you don't need much capital to start the business. We used EUR 18,000, self-financed, to start.
