A conversation with... Patrick De Schutter

Founding partner of ContactOffice

Entrepreneur Patrick de Schutter describes how his fledgling company survived the internet bust by staying committed to its vision and pursuing an international strategy through the internet, where a company that operates out of a small country like Belgium can make its product available immediately to customers the world over.

Let's talk about figures : 1,7" € Turnover, 9 p. employed after 8 years, and officially 260.000 paying users, this is 7 € ARPU (Average Revenue per User). Who is talking about a Success Story ... ???

I wonder how these solutions will manage to keep up with the future. Years ago, people predicted that such solutions would fail in the long run because Microsoft could decide to go full web. And they do so but luckily for the small business, Microsoft is not always so fast to implement and prevent a threat. It's clear that Microsoft with their range of similar solutions is reacting but they have not reacted with the excellent solution. The future of these smaller players is still secured for another few years but I'm more concerned by silent risers like Google web apps. It's not rational that Google is such a strong attention attractor as they are also fallible. Going Web2.0 could be a delay of execution but the advantages of a single paying format are stronger than multiple open formats. It can only be avoided if monopolists yield to public pressure and accept open formats. Market mechanics alone are not enough.

I believe the guy has all it takes to make his company a continued success. He has a strong Vison and commitment, he still stayed to the course even when others were failing. The key for his continued success would be to keep reading the market and its direction. That way he will always be ahead of direct competition as well as any other company that might bundle this product with somthing else and offer it free (e.g people have mentioned google)

Good job and all the best

hmm.. ethusiasm is all over this story.. and it is good.. but believing in something usually is not enough to success..
this concept of contact office.. collaborative tool.. is as abel said "easy to find free on google" .. pretty risky product in these days when open source is more and more in use..

Encouraging, this person got high ambitions, & what keep him on the top is his passion for success. I am pleased because it gives motivation to small business owners as well as anyone who got the well. I would say to him congratulations because you deserve it.

Cheers . . .

"We believed in the idea. We said, “we are right. What we’re doing is right, and we’ll prove it.”"

There's that passion that keeps entrepreneurs going!

The net definitely makes it easier for companies with products like this to reach far out into markets where it wouldn't have been feasible in the past. A "Long Tail" segment of the market, if you will, becomes accessible and when all taken together diversifies your client base and makes business more stable.

Good stuff!
