If you need to motivate the people you work with, you are working with the wrong people. If your job as a leader is motivation, you might better read up about motivation. Because if their is one thing science has proven without a doubt, it is that fact that people that are motivated by external influences need more and more of the stuff to stay motivated.
You will have more success through reading the signals of you employees and what those signals say about your own motivation, then trying to motivate them to do what you want. I think it was general Patton who said: "Don't tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results." So motivation is found by giving people something to do, that fits their abilities, not by motivating them to do something with their abilities.

I think that true Leadership is about showing direction (so you can call your self a "director"), give meaning of the companys mission to your emplyees and motivate them to develop themselves to their potential. Of cource, I think one can be very profitable with people that "suprises" you (heroes) but only to a limit, To trust your company on those "heroes" can be very risky, to create a culture for everyone feeling as they are part of a winning team I think is more viable.
